CodeWeekend began as a volunteer-led developer community in Kabul and grew into a nonprofit delivering practical, mentor-supported technology education for Afghan learners. This timeline preserves the numbers the organization published at each stage.
- 2014
Founded in Kabul
Jamshid Hashimi founded CodeWeekend on June 4, 2014. The volunteer community went on to organize more than 100 sessions, events, and training programs and support hundreds of developers.
- 2019
The first coding bootcamp
CodeWeekend made structured bootcamp training its main focus. The free pilot accepted 20 learners and graduated 12.
- 2021
A remote cohort for Afghan youth
After the events of August 2021, the program expanded into a remote, full-time format for learners inside and outside Afghanistan. The cohort began with 75 participants and included continuing coaching and mentorship. Read the 2021 cohort record.
- 2022
Scholarships, access, and a third cohort
More than 250 people applied and 30 learners joined the third cohort. Hackajob funded scholarships for 20 women, and Scrimba provided one year of premium access to 100 learners. Read the 2022 review.
- 2026
Women, AI education, and nonprofit status
CodeWeekend received more than 280 applications for its Web & AI program and admitted 50 women and girls. The Linda Norgrove Foundation supported 30 scholarships and 24 internet packages. CodeWeekend also incorporated as a nonprofit society in British Columbia. See the 2026 cohort impact.

Applications, admissions, scholarships, and participation are different measures. CodeWeekend publishes them separately and does not describe admissions as graduations or guarantee an employment outcome. Future reporting will add verified completion, portfolio, internship, and employment measures as they become available.
